Great Places To Visit

Elton Hall

An extraordinary, romantic, part Gothic house which has been in the Proby family since 1660.

The Hall, which stands in the midst of unspoilt landscaped parkland, is a fascinating mix of styles surrounded by stunning gardens. There is also a garden centre and Loch Fyne restaurant to visit.

Elton Hall was the seat of the ancient family of Sapcott, one of whom, Sir Richard Sapcott, was sheriff of Huntingdonshire (9 Edward IV.). There never was a perfect castle here, but there remains the gatehouse, a curious tower of the old mansion, rebuilt after the Restoration, which is a fine example of fifteenth-century work, having a “very bold machicoulis carrying the battlement and alure, with an octagonal watch-turret; the archway is four-centred, and the windows are square-headed.” (Castles Of England, Sir James D. Mackenzie, 1896)
